A desk built into the room, not pushed against a wall

A desk in the corner of a spare room soon stops working. The chair clips the wardrobe door, the leads run behind the radiator and the printer lives on the floor. A fitted home office starts from the room instead: the alcove, the window, where the door swings and where the sockets are. The desk, the storage and the shelving are then made to those measurements, wall to wall and up to the ceiling if you want them, with every filler and end panel scribed to the millimetre on site.

We design and fit from our base in Sileby, across Leicestershire and into Nottingham, Derby and the Warwickshire border. Aaran comes to you, measures the room and draws the design in 3D while he is there, so you can move the desk, add a cupboard or lose a shelf before anything is ordered.

What goes into a fitted office

A desk made to the space

The desk is sized to you and your chair rather than to a catalogue. A long run along one wall for two people, a single desk tucked into an alcove, or a return round the corner so the screen faces away from the window. The worktop can match the doors, or a contrasting 36mm worktop is available where you want something with more weight to it.

Storage that hides the clutter

Cupboards for the printer, the paper and the box files. Drawers for the chargers and the stationery. A tall cupboard for the things you need but never want to look at. Every door and drawer is soft-close, and the carcase behind them is 18mm with a solid 18mm back and top, the same as our wardrobes.

Shelving and display

Open shelves break up a run of doors and give the room some life. They can be in the same finish as the doors or in a woodgrain. Dimmable LED lighting is available under the shelves and above the desk, in warm or neutral white, so you are not working under the ceiling light alone.

Cables and sockets

We plan the desk around the sockets you already have, with cable holes in the desk and space behind for the leads, so they stay out of sight. Nothing trails across the floor and nothing hangs down the wall.

An office that is still a spare bedroom

A home office usually has to do two jobs. The usual answer is to give the desk one wall and keep the bed, with a wardrobe built into the same run so the bedding and a guest’s clothes have a home. If you would rather the desk disappeared when family stay, it can sit inside the run and close away behind doors, and the room reads as a bedroom again in a minute. Because the whole wall is one piece of furniture in one finish, it never looks like an office with a bed squeezed in beside it.

Under the stairs and in the box room

A box room is usually too narrow for a bought desk and a bookcase to sit side by side. A desk made to the width of the room, with shelves above and drawers below, uses the full width and leaves the floor clear for the chair, as in the box-room office we fitted in Hinckley. Under the stairs, the desk and the cupboards follow the slope of the stairs, so the awkward triangle at the back becomes storage and the doors still open properly. Loft rooms with sloping ceilings work the same way: the furniture is made to the angle rather than stopping short of it. Aaran has over 15 years’ experience of fitting furniture into rooms that are not square, and that is where a fitted office makes the biggest difference.

Finishes

Every door style on our finishes page is open to you. Shaker No Grooves and Contemporary Shaker suit a softer, more traditional room. Aurora and Capri give a plain modern door, Stockholm and Oslo a fluted one, and Manhattan has the handle built into the door itself, so there is nothing to catch a sleeve as you turn in your chair. We have no showroom, so we bring the samples to you and you see the colours in your own light, against your own walls and carpet.

What is included

One price, in writing, valid for 30 days. It covers the design, every panel, plinth, cornice, handle and interior, the worktop, delivery and the fitting, including the scribing to your walls and ceiling. There is nothing added at the end. Our price guide explains what moves a job between the £, ££ and £££ tiers.

Our guarantee

Every fitted office comes with our guarantee: 10 years, fitted by us. If anything needs looking at while it’s under guarantee, you ring Aaran.

Questions people ask

Can a fitted home office still work as a spare bedroom?

Yes. A home office often has to double as a spare bedroom, and the design starts from that. The desk and storage take one wall, the bed stays, and a wardrobe or cupboards in the same run hold the bedding and a guest's clothes. If you would rather the desk vanished when people stay, it can close away behind doors.

Can you fit a home office under the stairs or in a box room?

Yes. Under the stairs the desk and cupboards are made to follow the slope, so the space is used right to the back. In a box room the desk is made to the full width of the room with shelves above and drawers below, which leaves the floor clear.

What happens with the cables, sockets and the router?

We plan the desk around the sockets you already have, with cable holes in the desk and space behind for the leads, so they stay out of sight.

Can I have a 36mm worktop or lighting over the desk?

Both are available. A 36mm worktop gives the desk more weight and suits a contrasting colour or woodgrain. Dimmable LED lighting is available under the shelves and above the desk, in warm or neutral white. Either is priced into the one figure if you choose it.

Where do you fit home offices?

We work from Sileby across Leicestershire, including Leicester, Loughborough, Hinckley, Market Bosworth, Coalville, Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Lutterworth, and into Nuneaton, Tamworth, Burton upon Trent, Nottingham and Derby. The free design visit is at your home, wherever you are in that area.
