Media wall checklist: what to decide before your design visit
A media wall puts the television, the fire, the storage and the lighting into one piece of furniture, fitted wall to wall. It works best when a few things are decided before it’s designed. Here’s the list we go through at the design visit.
1. The television
- Which TV, and how big? The recess and the panel behind it are made to fit it, so we need the model or its measurements.
- Wall-hung or on a shelf?
- Where does it sit? Eye height from the sofa matters more than the middle of the wall.
2. A fire, or not
An electric fire set into the low cupboards is the usual choice. We can supply the fire, or work around one you’ve chosen. Either way we need its size before the furniture is ordered.
3. Lighting
Lighting is what makes a media wall look finished in the evening: a lit panel behind the screen, and LED strips in the open shelves. Dimmable LED lighting in warm or neutral white is available. Decide whether you’d like it at the start, because the cables run inside the furniture.
4. Sockets and cables
- Where are the sockets now, and where will the TV, the fire, the lighting and the boxes need power?
- Any mains electrical work, such as a new socket or a spur, is done by a qualified electrician, arranged and paid for separately. We plan the positions with you, so the electrician knows exactly what’s needed and the cables end up hidden.
5. Storage
What needs a home: the TV boxes, games consoles, books, photos, the things you’d rather not see? Cupboards hide clutter; open shelves show off the things you like. Tall cupboards at the ends of the run add a lot of storage.
6. The rest of the room
Think about where the sofa goes, the windows and doors either side, and the radiator. In Ratcliffe on the Wreake the customer wanted to keep their sofa, so the whole media wall was designed around it, with tall cupboards at each end, lit shelves either side of the television and the fire in a run of low cupboards. It was fitted in two days.
Then book the visit
Aaran measures the wall, talks it through and draws the media wall in 3D while he’s with you, using the samples you choose in your own light. You get one price covering everything we supply and fit, valid for 30 days.

Questions people ask
Do you supply the TV and fire for a media wall?
We can supply the fire. The television is yours. The furniture is built around both, so we need their sizes before anything is ordered.
Who does the electrics for a media wall?
Any mains electrical work, such as a new socket or a spur for the fire or the lighting, is done by a qualified electrician, arranged and paid for separately. We plan where everything goes at the design visit so the electrician knows exactly what's needed.
How long does a media wall take to fit?
Most are fitted in one to three days. We'll tell you exactly at the design visit. From your go-ahead to fitting day is usually 6 to 8 weeks.
